My interviews with people who I think are rad.

Colleen Matmos Manitoba

Colleen grew up like most of us, in a sleepy suburb where adolescent doldrums were fended off in garage bands and where Walkmen populated with the Pixies, Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine bolstered hope for a future beyond her hometown located 100 kilometers south of Paris. As the familiar story unfolds, the bands split-up, life goes on and an investment is made in one of Tape Op’s favorite modern marvels — the four-track recorder.

If I told you Matmos made audio cut-up, experimental, electronic music that closely parallels conceptual art, you'd probably write them off as some snobby, avant garde, artsy-fartsy, black turtleneck and a goatee noise group. If I informed you that their latest CD on Matador records, entitled "A Chance To Cut Is A Chance To Cure," was constructed mostly from manipulated field recordings of cosmetic surgeries, you'd probably pass it off as a morbid gimmick that sounds cute on paper, but probably wears thin after repeated listenings...

Success is a nerd’s best revenge. Dan Snaith (aka Manitoba) might just have the makings of the best revenge of the nerds story yet (well, aside from Bill Gates). Ladytron People Under The Stairs DJ Spooky

Ladytron’s rise to underground acclaim was the musical masterstroke to defining a future-retro genre centered around breathy female vocals, vintage analog synthesizers and simple pop song structures. I got the chance to interview Daniel Hunt, one of the main masterminds behind Ladytron’s sound and their main songwriter...

The People Under The Stairs sound is a throwback to a time when hip-hop was pure, rhymes reflected everyday life and beats were sampled from old school funk - not drum machines. Thes One and Double K are leaders in the true school revolution to bring hip-hop back to its foundation of bumpin' beats, sippin' beer, diggin' through the crates and smokin' fat blunts & an era when hip-hop was about real life...

DJ Spooky is a musical messiah for this electronic age. He's a DJ, a writer with a degree in French literature and philosophy, and a published art critic who spends his days composing the subliminal theme music for our generation's quest to understand what it means to be children of technology...

KaitO

KaitO's sound is a fresh, raw and vital combination of catchy, hook-filled pop and playful, inventive guitar noise falling somewhere between Sleater-Kinney, The Pixies, and Sonic Youth. Just two boys and two girls from Norwich, UK, who happen to be making some outrageously cool, creative music. Here's a little bit of my intercontinental phone call with pop superstars Kaito...
